April 2024

The ADP Research Institute Employee Motivation and Commitment Index fell 11 points in April, the largest month-over-month drop in a year. Real estate led the decline.

Sentiment among real estate professionals suffered a dramatic decline, reaching its lowest level in more than two years.

“The drop repeats a pattern seen in April 2023. But it also comes after the National Association of Realtors said it would pay $418 million to settle a series of lawsuits brought by home sellers. The deal has shaken the industry and called into question the future of the industry’s traditional 6 percent commission.” said Dr. Mary Hayes, director of People and Performance Research at the ADP Research Institute.

Education services had its biggest month-over-month increase in the history of the index, reaching a new high of 137. Manufacturing lost nearly all of the 40-point gain it posted in March, sliding to 149.

The Employee Motivation and Commitment Index tracks how people think and feel about their jobs and employers. By providing a real-time measure of the state of worker allegiance, it can tell us whether workers are flourishing in their jobs or detaching.

The ADP Research Institute publishes the EMC Index on the third Tuesday of every month. The next release will be May 21. For EMC Index historical data, visit ADPRI’s Data Lab.
